The British vehicle brand ROVER, the rights to which have belonged to the Indian automobile manufacturer Tata since 2008, enjoyed a great reputation for its luxury vehicles for decades. The cars of this traditional brand were seen as castles on wheels, which weren’t really economical due to their high fuel consumption, but could still win over fans with their powerful engines and high-quality interior. For the upper class, these luxury vehicles were sought-after prestige objects which were known for their reliability and their durability. However, the merger with the British Leyland Motor Corporation and accumulating problems led to a loss of this good image. Today, the once polarising vehicles are only available to buyers as used vehicles and classics.
ROVER used vehicles and their drawbacks
One of the last vehicles produced was the ROVER 25, as the 3rd generation of the 200. Common issues are high oil loss in the transmission as well as the need for repairs at the tailgate where cables and fluid lines tend to break or become abraded. Between 1990 and 2005, the 400 series was another compact vehicle, which was sold under the name 45 from 1999. The cylinder head gaskets are prone to defects, especially in models with 1.4 and 1.6 litre engines. You should also check for rust and inspect the rear axle bushings before buying one of these vehicles used.
ROVER – a long list of typical issues
In spite of the BMW technology under the hood, the midsize vehicle 75, released in 1998, was not able to live up to the vehicle models of the marque’s glory years. The list of problem areas is relatively long, with blown cylinder head gaskets, thermostat and clutch issues, torn driving belts, broken ventilators and failure-prone injection systems. Weak points of the 600, produced between 1993 and 1999, are the battery, shock absorbers, exhaust system, and power windows.
