Boot gas springs are used for accessing the transported items conveniently. They ensure easy movement of the lid in both directions and can hold it in the open position, which is convenient for loading the cargo or working in the luggage compartment. They are replaced as they wear.
What you need to know about replacing boot gas springs
- Faulty components are easily recognized by deteriorated efficiency. Abrupt lid opening, inability to secure its position or difficult closing show that the component is worn out. In some cases, oil streaks appear on car part’s surface.
- The method of components installation depends on their design. For example, springs with two seals can be installed any side up, with a single seal — only as specified by the manufacturer.
- You can easily replace these car parts yourself. Depending on the type of attachment, you may need an open-end spanner, a hex socket, snipe nose pliers, a clamp, a flat-head screwdriver, and safety props. Also, prepare some silicone grease in advance. Prior to installation, the gas spring should be primed. To do this, set them into the working position, depress the rod until it stops, keep it in this position for a few seconds, and then release. Repeat these actions 15 ‑ 20 times.
- These car parts are to be replaced in pairs since if one of them fails, the other one is likely to fail soon, too. Before ordering boot gas springs, check whether they match the parameters of your vehicle, and what load they can withstand.
- The service life of the components depends on the operating conditions. If you have not used the luggage compartment for a long time, open it slowly, without jerks, or you may damage the spring mechanism. In very cold weather, it is not recommended to lift the lid without preheating the engine.
