Rear lights warn other road users about presence of the vehicle on the road, its size, and the driver’s intention to stop or perform a maneuver. The service life of the components is not specified.
What you should know about replacing rear lights
- Failure of the component is most frequently indicated by misting of its housing, dull light or its complete absence. Besides, during an inspection, one can see scratches, chips, and cracks.
- If you have appropriate skills of working with electric equipment, you can replace the lights yourself. Before you start dismantling them, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, and, if necessary, remove the bumper. When disconnecting all contacts, it is important to be careful to avoid damaging the connection points. Fasteners should be removed with wrenches or pliers.
- During assembly, stick to the procedure specified by the manufacturer of your vehicle. In most cases, some sealant should be applied to the vehicle body in the locations where it touches the component. This prevents water from getting not only into the housing of the light, but into the passenger compartment and the luggage compartment as well.
- The lighting elements may be replaced one at a time, as needed, or in pairs. The latter is more preferable when the new light differs from the old one in its color or other design features. During repair, do not forget about replacing the gasket of the light. Many manufacturers offer to buy rear lights as a kit with seals. This way, you will not have to waste your time and effort searching for the seals at an online store to order them separately.
- For lights detailing, use special auto chemicals and a soft cloth.
